Chevening Scholarship 2027 in UK
By Site Admin · Updated Oct 6, 2026 · 4 min read
The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship international award, fully funding a one-year taught master's degree at any UK university for outstanding future leaders. Managed by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the programme has supported nearly 60,000 professionals from over 160 countries since 1983, and Pakistan consistently sits among the top recipient nations with roughly 50–60 Pakistani scholars selected each year. For the 2027–2028 cycle, applications opened on 4 August 2026 and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Pakistani professionals with at least two years of work experience, a strong academic record, and clear leadership potential are eligible to apply. The scholarship covers full tuition, a monthly living stipend, return airfare from Pakistan, visa costs, and several additional allowances — with no bond or repayment required beyond a commitment to return to Pakistan for at least two years after completing the master's.
Benefits
Chevening is one of the few globally recognised scholarships that covers essentially every cost of studying abroad. The full benefit package for Pakistani scholars includes:
Full university tuition fees at any Chevening-approved UK master's programme, regardless of cost
Monthly living stipend — approximately £1,378 for scholars studying outside London and £1,690 for scholars in London. Rates are reviewed annually and confirmed in the acceptance letter
Return economy-class flight between Pakistan and the UK
Arrival allowance to help with initial settlement costs
Departure allowance paid before returning to Pakistan
One UK student visa application fee paid directly by Chevening
Travel grant to attend Chevening events across the UK during your programme
TB test contribution of up to £75, reimbursed against the cost of the visa-required tuberculosis screening
Access to the global Chevening alumni network of over 60,000 professionals worldwide — a lifelong professional resource
Structured leadership development programme through Chevening events, workshops, and networking with UK policymakers
The total value of a Chevening Scholarship typically ranges between £30,000 and £50,000 depending on the chosen course and university.
Eligibility
To apply for a Chevening Scholarship from Pakistan, you must meet every one of the following requirements. Ineligible applications are rejected without review, so verify each point before starting your application.
Basic requirements
Be a citizen of Pakistan (or another Chevening-eligible country) at the time of application
Reside in Pakistan (or another eligible country outside the UK) when you apply
Commit to returning to Pakistan for at least two years after your scholarship ends
Not hold British or dual British citizenship
Academic requirements
Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours (2:1) — for Pakistan, this typically means a 16-year education with a minimum 3.0 CGPA on a 4.0 scale
Have completed your undergraduate degree at least two years before the application deadline. Your certificate is not required at application stage but must be available by the interview
A previous master's degree does not disqualify you from applying for a second master's
Work experience requirement
Have completed at least two years (approximately 2,800 hours) of work experience by the application deadline
Experience can combine full-time employment, part-time work (calculated on a pro-rata basis), paid internships, freelance work, and in some cases substantial volunteer roles
Experience must have been acquired after completing your undergraduate degree
University application requirement
Apply to three different eligible UK master's courses through the individual universities' own application processes
Secure at least one unconditional offer from a UK university by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST if you are shortlisted for the scholarship
Ineligibility conditions
You cannot apply for Chevening if you:
Currently reside in the UK
Have previously received a UK government-funded scholarship to study in the UK
Are an employee, immediate relative of an employee, or former employee (within the last two years) of the FCDO, British Council, a partner UK university, or any wholly owned subsidiary
Language requirement: Chevening itself does not require IELTS or TOEFL scores at the application stage. However, individual UK universities will have their own English proficiency requirements — most Pakistani applicants will need IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 to secure the required unconditional offer.
Required documents
You do not need to upload every document at initial application. The requirements are staged across the process.
At application submission (by 6 October 2026):
Copy of your passport or national ID
Complete academic transcripts from your undergraduate degree (all years)
Complete transcripts from any previous postgraduate degrees
Details of your three chosen UK master's courses (course name, university, application status)
Four completed essays within the Chevening application form — Leadership and Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and Career Plan (each 500 words maximum)
If shortlisted for interview (by February 2027):
Two reference letters from professional or academic referees, submitted through the online system
Original undergraduate degree certificate (or verified copy)
Any additional documents requested by the British High Commission in Islamabad
Before starting your studies (by 8 July 2027):
Unconditional offer letter from at least one of your three chosen UK universities
Valid UK student visa (application fee covered by Chevening)
Tuberculosis clearance certificate for the UK visa
All documents in Urdu must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Chevening does not require documents to be HEC-attested at application stage, but the destination UK university may.
How to apply
The Chevening application runs on a fixed annual cycle with hard deadlines. Missing any milestone means waiting another full year.
Confirm your eligibility — Take the official readiness quiz on chevening.org before investing time in essays. Ineligible applications are rejected without review.
Research and shortlist your three UK master's courses — Use the Chevening course finder or explore UK university websites directly. Choose courses that align tightly with your career plan, because you will be asked to justify each choice in the essays.
Register on the online application portal — Create an account at chevening.org/apply and save your progress as you complete each section. The portal accepts edits until the deadline.
Draft your four essays offline first — Leadership and Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and Career Plan. Each is capped at 500 words. Weak essays are the single most common reason strong candidates are rejected. Do not use AI-generated content — Chevening explicitly disqualifies applications flagged as AI-written.
Line up your two referees early — You will not need to submit their references at application stage, but if shortlisted you must produce them quickly. Confirm your referees are willing and available now.
Submit your Chevening application before 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC — This is noon UK time, which is 4:00 PM Pakistan Standard Time. Submit at least 48 hours early to avoid last-minute portal issues.
Wait for shortlisting decision — Independent reading committees review all eligible applications between mid-October 2026 and January 2027. Shortlisted candidates are notified in mid-February 2027.
Attend your interview — Interviews take place between March and April 2027 at the British High Commission in Islamabad. Panels typically last 30 to 45 minutes and focus on leadership examples, career vision, and your reasons for choosing your specific courses.
Apply to your three chosen UK universities in parallel — You do not need offers when applying to Chevening, but if you receive a conditional scholarship offer you must have at least one unconditional UK university offer by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST.
Receive your final Chevening decision — Successful candidates are informed by June 2027. Conditional scholarship offers become confirmed once you submit your unconditional university offer.
Apply for your UK student visa — Chevening covers the application fee. Book early, as visa appointment slots fill quickly during peak season.
Arrive in the UK — 2027–2028 Chevening scholars begin their programmes in September or October 2027.
